Hey, this got us thinking
We’ve been reading a lot of doomsday headlines recently.
– ‘Europe could be headed for its longest ever recession’
– ‘US looks certain to enter recession’
– ‘Global economy teetering on the edge’
It’s all a bit unsettling. So we wanted to provide some reassurance.
Granted, the global economy is facing a bit of a hangover after there was plenty of economic stimulus and support provided during the pandemic. Interest rates are on the up and inflation is high. It’s all led to a tough year for investors.
But these are the times that we will look back on in 5/10/20 years time and think what a great opportunity it was for investors.
There might be some turbulence to come, who knows what is going to happen in the near future, but we can be confident over the long term that the economy will recover and so will our portfolios. Over time, history tells us that the stock market goes up, and market downturns are great opportunities.
We can also use these times to pick out the weeds in our portfolio. If there are things you’re uncomfortable with, cut them loose. In tough economic times, you want to be owning the most resilient companies out there.

Here’s a look at what previous recessions have meant for Australia’s stock market…
The main takeaway is that every recession is different. Yes, the definition might be the same, but there are always different factors at play. Remember, a recession in Australia is no certainty, so we’re in a pretty good position at the moment. But even if we do fall into a recession, it’s not all doom and gloom. These can be great opportunities to reconfigurate our portfolio and take advantage of lower prices.
