Get started weekly: Procrastinating? 5 tips to help you start investing…

@EQUITYMATES|25 April, 2023

At Equity Mates Media, we’ve got two podcasts designed to help new investors and those who are yet to get started. Here’s what we’re chatting about this week…

Should I invest in gold?

There’s a lot of gold chat at the moment. It’s reached an all-time-high – that’s $2,000 an ounce. Bryce and Alec want to talk about why that’s happening, and whether it’s a good investment for you. One of the team does own gold as a tool to balance his portfolio, and the other doesn’t think it’s for him – and sold all his quite a while ago and isn’t interested in jumping back in.

To close out, Bryce and Alec chat about was you actually can invest in gold, along with their recommendations – checking out a range of ETFs that track actual gold, the gold price, and miners!

Over the last few months, Maddy and Sophie from You’re In Good Company have been talking to some founders who took the leap and either made their side hustle their regular gig, or just built massive businesses from the ground up. The women they’ve been talking to have been incredible – everything from exercise moguls, to beauty entrepreneurs and lingerie designers. This

This week they spoke to Michelle Battersby, the Co-Founder & Chief Marketing Officer at Sunroom. Michelle has had an amazing and varied career – she started in banking and HR, before taking a leap of faith to join Bumble as one of their first Australian employees. She shares her story, and how she had the courage to start her own startup – Sunroom – a unique tech platform that allows women and non-binary creators to earn money.

Dragging your feet?
Here’s 5 tips to help start investing….

Has investing been constantly on your ‘to do’ list and you’ve just not got around to it? You’re not alone. There’s so many people who listen every week, and haven’t managed to hit ‘buy’ on their first parcel of shares yet.
Here’s our top 5 tips to help you get out of the ‘one day’ soon headspace:

  1. Visit our Compound Interest Calculator! We subscribe to the belief that it is the 8th wonder of the world. Enter even the smallest amount and it’ll help you visualise how from little amounts of money, big wealth grows.
  2. Get across the basics! If you’re not feeling motivated – why don’t you revisit our 12 Steps to Start Investing. Investing is full of jargon, and feels pretty dense, but we’re proof that anyone can learn to invest.
  3. Create a budget. It’s hard to put money into the market when you don’t know how much you actually have to play with. Include everything – rent, utilities, food, fun money! If you’re stuck about where to get started – Bryce (our resident excel whiz) kindly shared his budget template here.
  4. Find an Equity Mate. That was a lame pun. But sometimes it’s boring doing stuff on your own – and your actual real life friends might not be interested in investing (or is that just me?) If you haven’t already, come and hang out in the Equity Mates forum, ask questions and share what you’ve learned.
  5. Start small and automate. Investing is overwhelming. So, don’t make it harder for yourself than it is! Once you’ve done the research, and signed up for a broker, why not just set up automated investing so you don’t have to think about it? Bryce and Ren unpack it all in this episode.
