Get started weekly: 📈 CEOs are making millions trading competitors stock

@EQUITYMATES|18 April, 2023

At Equity Mates Media, we’ve got two podcasts designed to help new investors and those who are yet to get started. Here’s what we’re chatting about this week…

How much $ do I need to retire early?

Are you dreaming of retiring early, but wondering how much money you need to make it a reality? Retiring early can mean different things to different people: for some, it may mean no work at all! For others, it may mean part-time work or filling their days doing what they love. Bryce and Ren break down what “retiring early” actually means and how to determine the amount of money you need to make it happen.

So, how should you go about it?

  1. Determine the amount of $$ you’ll actually need
  2. Multiply your expected annual expenses
  3. Consider your expected investment returns
  4. Factor in inflation
  5. Adjust your savings plan accordingly!

Tune into the episode to hear them break down each of these steps and how they would approach it!

Everywhere you look, the price of things is on the rise! Quite a few of us are looking at the old side-hustle to earn some extra coin. Also, sometimes side-hustles grow up, and become huge, all-consuming, full-time businesses.

This week, Maddy and Sophie are joined by Lucy Henry-Hicks, who founded Dissh – when she was still in high school! She talks about the huge pivots the company has undertaken in the last few years, and how Lucy had a very strong vision for what the brand would be, and why authenticity is so central to everything she does.

Question from the Community

“Hey guys, I’ve been looking to add a few thematic ETFs to my portfolio, but some of them are pretty niche. How can I tell if these are long term plays, or are they going to run out of steam?”

There’s an ETF for (almost) everything these days. So, when you’re a retail investor, it can kind of be tricky to figure out what might just be an investing ‘fad’ and what’s something with a real, long-term investable future. Bryce and Ren pulled this apart in our last ‘Under the Hood’ episode with Blair Hannon from Global X.
Here’s a quick refresh of the main points:

Not all ETFs are created equal – there’s many ETFs available but not all themes have long-term potential. You need to do your homework!

Does this theme represent a real transition in the world? We don’t want to find a fad, this should be a proper paradigm shift.

A theme should be broad. If there’s only three companies doing this – then go research the stocks! Double check there’s 20 – 40 companies under the hood, and that there’s a certain amount of liquidity too.

What’s your time-frame? Blair likes to ask himself – where does it sit on the S-Curve? Is it about to be embraced by everyone? Or is it in the middle of the adoption time-frame.

Make sure you listen to the episode for all the context. Also – send us your questions: contact@equitymates.com. We might answer it on the next show!
