Meet Vidio, Indonesia’s answer to streaming and a local player taking it to the global streaming giants. It is the fastest growing streaming platform in Indonesia and in the last quarter was the largest streaming platform in South East Asia.
And it is important to remember the size of the South East Asian market. Netflix globally has ~220 million subscribers. Vidio in South East Asia has ~60 million viewers per month. Netflix’s move into an ad-supported model is largely to help them find their next leg of growth and drive subscriptions in India and in South East Asia, but it seems they’re going to have some strong local competition.
This article looks at the local tech player taking it to their global, multi-billion dollar competitors. And reading this article it reminds us of an interview we published last year with David Halpert, the CIO of Prince Street Capital, who coined the term ‘digital decolonisation’. Essentially, his investment thesis in emerging markets, particularly in South East Asia, is that we’ll see local platforms emerge that end American tech ‘colonisation’. We’ve seen it most obviously in China, but we are starting to see South East Asian companies like Sea, Grab and GoTo take market share back from foreign rivals. Vidio may be the latest company to add to that list.
